I mentioned in my last post that an inexpensive and easy way to look younger and feel better was simply to drink more water. As I have been reading about natural health I ran across the article Top 7 Causes of Aging Skin. Sharon O’Brien shares seven healthy choices to help prevent prematurely aging skin:

“Here are 7 key factors that contribute to aging skin, making you look older than your years:

Cigarette smoke

Sun exposure

Lack of exercise

Exposure to cold weather

Alcohol use

Stress

Lack of sleep”

Maharishi Ayurveda says in the Seven Things You Can Do to Prevent Skin from Aging “Each year, Americans spend billions of dollars on beauty products to prevent their skin from aging. Yet keeping your skin youthful takes much more than applying a moisturizer. Knowing your skin type, eating the right diet, and daily cleansing are essential for fresh and young looking skin.” For younger looking skin and a healthier body:
Protect yourself from the sun

Avoid Chemicals

Eat for your skin type

Soothe Away Stress

Cleanse and gently exfoliate

Rehydrate from the inside and outside

Nourish your skin

Follow these tips and you will lay a foundation of good, healthy habits that will help you prevent prematurely aging skin.

Drink more water! Keeping your body hydrated is incredibly important. A woman’s body is about 55% water, even your bones being about 22% water. Use this handy Total Body Water Calculator to estimate your body water percentage. In this health importance of water article they state the body uses water in many ways:

Water serves as a lubricant

Water forms the base for saliva

Water forms the fluids that surround the joints.

Water regulates the body temperature, as the cooling and heating is distributed through perspiration.

Water helps to alleviate constipation by moving food through the intestinal tract and thereby eliminating waste- the best detox agent.

Regulates metabolism

In addition to the daily maintainence of our bodies, water also plays a key role in the prevention of disease. Drinking eight glasses of water daily can decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45%, bladder cancer by 50% and it can potentially even reduce the risk of breast cancer.”

Need more convincing how water can help you feel better and look younger? From MSN Women’s Health Drinking Water:

“Drinking water can help you burn fat, beat a fever, improve your complexion, relieve constipation, build muscle, drain a stuffy nose, fight a stomachache, and improve your mood. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a condition that isn’t eased by imbibing more cleansing, curative water.

In Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj argues that the body can “misinterpret thirst signals as pain,” and that drinking more water can be helpful in curing everything from headaches and depression to asthma and arthritis.”

There are lots of programs and products out there to help you look better and feel younger, but the best way to start is by drinking your appropriate amount of water.

Today beauty products like wrinkle creams and hair-growth treatments and other anti-aging products are getting even more powerful. According to Newsweek in it’s article Fighting Crow’s Feet and Cancer, cosmeceuticals are products that blur the line between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. These new anti-aging products are developed as pharmaceutical products, but instead of claiming health-related benefits they use nuanced language such as promising to “to reduce “the appearance” of fine lines, not to alter the skin”.

“Clinical trials are expensive, so we started to explore commercial opportunities,” says Agidermatics founder Daniel Yarosh. “We thought, ‘Why not take science-based standards… and apply them to cosmetic products?’ ” Products featuring Agidermatics ingredients range from sunscreen to eye gel, over 100 different skin care products in all.

BusinessWeek has put together a slideshow of cosmeceutical products available describing some of the latest skin care products, including products such as Anew Deep Crease by Avon, Botox, Hyaluronic Acid from Restylane and Hylaform, and even good old Vitamins A and C. Many of these new skin care items show promise, but Newsweek offers this warning to not get too excited: ”People hoping to reverse the signs of aging are increasingly looking to “cosmeceuticals,” nonprescription creams, gels, and lotions that promise dramatic results. But the ugly truth is that most of the age-fighting products available for sale lack scientific data to support their claims.”

In our neverending war against aging we will keep developing new products and services to keep our skin looking younger, and skin care products with cosmeceuticals are the latest items on the front lines.

“Access any online women’s magazine, and peruse its message boards. There you will find postings from women desperately seeking to halt, or alter, the aging process. Endeavoring to transform themselves into the youthful, enhanced images they are bombarded with daily, may become an obsessive quest, one that is doomed to failure. Is it any wonder that many mature women suffer from low to no, self-esteem? Is it any wonder, as well, many of these women find themselves less inclined to sexual intimacy?”
